01 문서

두 장이다. f. 73r은 평문 세 행으로 시작하고 이어 암호 36행이 있다. f. 73v에는 암호 26행이 더 있고, 이어 Hamilton이 Argyll, Eglinton, Cassillis, Boyd를 위해 원했던 위임장에 관한 평문 구간, 날짜, 메리의 자필 서명이 있다. f. 73r 머리에는 후대의 필체로 "Lre Cyphered from ye Q. with the decifer"라고 적혀 있다. ff. 74r–v에는 다른 서기 필체로 쓴 스코틀랜드어 53행의 해독이 있다. 뒷면에는 "Recept [x]xiiij Januar"라는 배서가 있다.

02 암호

고안된 기호에 의한 한 문자 대 한 문자 치환으로, th 또는 y를 나타내는 기호 하나(Tomokiyo가 시사하듯 thorn), and와 to를 나타내는 단어 기호, 그리고 인물과 국가를 나타내는 코드 기호 몇 개가 있다. 키는 DECODE R8347에 철해진 Tomokiyo의 것이다. 첫 암호 행에서 이 키는 "ϕf … ∂ɼϕz qesqsϕf" = it … bein proposit를 내놓으며, 이는 해독의 첫머리 "it had bein proposit to me"와 한 단어 한 단어 일치한다. Tomokiyo는 같은 암호를 Cotton Caligula B IX f. 315b에서도 찾았는데, 이는 1568년 9월 9일 Bolton에서 메리가 한 주교에게 보낸 편지로, Labanoff가 인쇄했다.

03 해독

행 바꿈은 f. 74를 따른다. ⟨ ⟩는 해독자가 기호로 남겨 둔 코드 기호, [?]는 의심스러운 단어를 나타낸다. 철자는 해독자의 것이다.

04 방법

Add MS 33531의 엽 번호는 archive.org에 있는 Bain 제2권의 텍스트에서 찾았으며, 이를 통해 편지, 그 날짜, 해독의 존재를 알게 되었다. DECODE 이미지 4장을 원래 해상도로 가져와, 띠 모양으로 잘라 낸 이미지에서 해독을 전사했다. Tomokiyo의 키는 첫 암호 행과 대조했다. 당대의 해독이 암호 전체를 다루므로 암호 자체는 기호 하나하나 전사하지 않았다.

05 여전히 불확실한 것

"deliverit in ⟨E⟩ handis"의 ⟨E⟩는 Bain의 각주와 문맥으로 보아 엘리자베스다(C). "spokin to me in ⟨Ꝗ⟩ name … to schaw hir"의 ⟨Ꝗ⟩도 아마 엘리자베스일 것이다(M).
⟨B⟩ ⟨p⟩ ⟨sp⟩는 프랑스와 스페인으로, Bain의 추측이며 뒤의 "to Fr and to Sp"가 이를 뒷받침한다(C).
⟨¥⟩, ⟨Mn⟩, ⟨X⟩, ⟨n⟩, ⟨k⟩, ⟨m⟩, ⟨Ƒ⟩, ⟨Ɡ⟩, 그리고 반복해 나오는 구분 표시 비슷한 기호는 해독자가 기호로 남겨 두었으며, 여기서도 해결하지 않았다. ⟨X⟩는 인물이나 장소를 가리키는 자리에 반복해 나온다("as to ⟨X⟩ I sal wryt", "munitioun to ⟨X⟩").
f. 73v의 날짜 중 일(日)은 이미지에서 일부 판독할 수 없으며, 1월 18일은 Bain의 판독이다. 해독문의 몇몇 단어는 전사에서 [?]로 표시했다.
