苏格兰女王玛丽致 Hamilton 大主教，1569年1月18日

摘要。总目第84项是一条没有人名的 DECODE 记录，日期为1568年1月，状态为“partially decrypted”。这封信以明文开头，“Reverend fader and traist cousigne and counsalo^r”，由玛丽本人署名，“Zour gud Cusines and asuryd frinde, Marie R”，写于“Bowtoun”，日期为1568年1月，按现代纪年即1569年。Bain 的Calendar of Scottish Papers第2卷第966号认定它是玛丽1月18日致圣安德鲁斯大主教的信，“chiefly in cipher”，并附“(2) Decipher of same”。那份解读就是下一叶 f. 74，它涵盖了全部密文正文。Tomokiyo 重建了密码字母表（“Mary–Hamilton cipher”），他存于 DECODE 记录中的密钥解密第一行密文的结果与当时的解读完全一致。这封信在送达时就被解读了。这项工作补充的是文本：Bain 印的是意译，这里则逐行转录了解读。玛丽拒绝把她的儿子交给伊丽莎白，承诺她忠实的臣民在任何和解中都不会有任何损失，预计到三月会有来自法国和西班牙的一万人马，并吩咐 Hamilton 在大赦把所有往事一笔勾销之前，先夺下汉密尔顿家族敌人的宅邸。少数几个短的代码符号仍未解决，解读者当时也把它们保留为符号。

01 文献

两叶。f. 73r 以三行明文开头，然后是36行密文。f. 73v 还有26行密文，一段关于 Hamilton 想为 Argyll、Eglinton、Cassillis 和 Boyd 申请的委任状的明文，以及日期和玛丽的亲笔署名。f. 73r 顶部有一个较晚的笔迹注明“Lre Cyphered from ye Q. with the decifer”。ff. 74r–v 是解读，53行苏格兰语，出自另一种书记体笔迹；背面批注“Recept [x]xiiij Januar”。

02 密码

一种用自创符号逐字母替换的密码，有一个符号表示th或y（如 Tomokiyo 所说，是一个 thorn），有表示and和to的词符号，还有几个代表人物和国家的代码符号。密钥是 Tomokiyo 的，存于 DECODE R8347。在第一行密文上，它给出“ϕf … ∂ɼϕz qesqsϕf” = it … bein proposit，与解读的开头“it had bein proposit to me”逐字相符。Tomokiyo 还在 Cotton Caligula B IX f. 315b 中发现了同一种密码，那是玛丽1568年9月9日在博尔顿致一位主教的信，Labanoff 曾刊印。

03 解读

f. 73v 上的明文结尾：“As concerning the commissioun ze desire us to send to the erlis of Argyle, Eglingtoun, Cassillis and Boyd, we knaw not in quhat maner ze desire the same, for we understand to haif alreddy ane generall Lieutenent … send us the same quhilk we sall subscryve and put ony day the dait … Off Bowtoun the [xviij] of Januar 1568. 04 方法

Add MS 33531 的张号是在 archive.org 上 Bain 第2卷的文本中查到的，由此得知了这封信、它的日期以及存在一份解读。四张 DECODE 图像以全分辨率获取，解读根据条带截图转录。Tomokiyo 的密钥在第一行密文上作了核对。密文本身没有逐符号转录，因为当时的解读已经涵盖了全部内容。

05 仍不确定的部分

“deliverit in ⟨E⟩ handis”中的 ⟨E⟩，根据 Bain 的脚注和文意，是伊丽莎白（C）。“spokin to me in ⟨Ꝗ⟩ name … to schaw hir”中的 ⟨Ꝗ⟩ 很可能也是伊丽莎白（M）。
⟨B⟩ ⟨p⟩ ⟨sp⟩ 是法国和西班牙，这是 Bain 的推测，并得到后文“to Fr and to Sp”的支持（C）。
⟨¥⟩、⟨Mn⟩、⟨X⟩、⟨n⟩、⟨k⟩、⟨m⟩、⟨Ƒ⟩、⟨Ɡ⟩ 以及一个反复出现、类似分隔符的符号，解读者都保留为符号，这里也没有解决。⟨X⟩ 反复出现在指某个人或某个地方的位置（“as to ⟨X⟩ I sal wryt”、“munitioun to ⟨X⟩”）。
f. 73v 上日期中的日子在图像上部分难以辨认；1月18日是 Bain 的读法。转录中有几个解读出的词标为 [?]。
