Robert Reade 致其表亲，巴黎，1641年4月19日

摘要。DECODE 把 R7766 编目为一封部分加密的信，寄自巴黎，日期1641年4月19日，写信人和收信人不明。此信署名“R. Reade”。背书写着“1641: April 19: my Cousin Reade from Paris”。写信人是 Robert Reade，Sir Francis Windebank 的侄子兼秘书。Windebank 是查理一世的国务大臣，1640年12月为躲避长期议会逃往巴黎。明写部分涉及斯特拉福德的审判、国王的文件、Walter Montagu 的到来，以及针对写信人的一项诽谤。两段密文承载的是这一家的私事。BL Add MS 32256 是破译处的密钥卷，其中有一张题为“Windebank to his Son. Paris. March 1642”的纸（DECODE R9115）。它是对同一密码的重建：字母位于1–100，50以下的奇数为虚码，一组符号字母，以及一份编到约735的按字母顺序排列的代码。借助它，第一段解读为 in case a proclamation shall go out against [him] … they have not enough against him to confiscate his fortune, and they would be [willing] to take the advantage of his refusal to return upon a summons; so on the other side, I do not find how his person can be strong if he shall return（strong 用的是旧义，即“安全”）。第二段说，Sir William St Ravy 在巴黎没有为 Forster 先生说好话。215个有效码组中，193个依据密钥上的值解读，8个依据本项目重建的值解读。其余14个是重建本留空的代码组，作为推测给出。范围：部分；93%已解读，7%为推测。

01 这封信

五行以点隔开的数字，夹有几个符号 — Harley MS 7001 f. 149r，页首：从 f. 148v 延续下来的密文，开头是“[as to] the one side, I am of opinion they have not enough against him to confiscate his fortune”。图像：British Library，Harley MS 7001 f. 149r，经由 DECODE R7766。

此信共三页（ff. 148r、148v、149r）。地址叶 f. 149v 上有背书和“Given by Mr G. Holmes”字样。它回复收信人4月1日的来信，接续 Reade 自己16日的信。明写部分涉及：

一则恶意传言，说 Reade 在一座花园里对两位法国绅士说议会的勋爵们都是傻瓜。他用了很长篇幅否认，并请收信人向首席大法官提出此事；
道路上满是士兵，这使一家人在巴黎住处所在的街区又困了一个月；
“My Lo: Lieutenant”，即正在受审的斯特拉福德，“fallen into the hands of noblemen and persons of honor”（落入了贵族和体面人士之手）；
国王的文件匣，以及财务大臣先生持有的一份副本；
王后的事务；
Montagu 先生到来，受到“very civilly”（十分礼貌）的接待；
Sir William St Ravy 动身前往英格兰；
为寄居在这一家中的 Forster 先生所作的辩护。

密文从信件转而谈 Windebank 本人的地方开始：“It is to be seriously considered what is to be done”。

02 密钥

一栏从551到600的数字，其中一些旁边写着词：strong、the、than、this、that、they、there、time — BL Add MS 32256，“Windebank’s C[ipher] continued 1640”那一页：从551开始的重建代码，其中 572 = to，574 = the，578 = that，586 = they，587 = there。图像：British Library，Add MS 32256，Windebank 密码的续页（f. 4 之后），经由 DECODE R9115。

DECODE R9115 是一份两页的工作表。破译处先印好空白的数字格子，再随着值的复原逐一填入。第一页标题为“Windebank to his Son. Paris. March 1642”，第二页为“Windebank’s C[ipher] continued 1640”。这种密码分四部分：

1–50：单个字母。每个奇数都标有 +（虚码）。偶数是字母：2 c，4 f，6 n，8 h，10 r，12 t，14 a，16 g，18 p，20 b，22 u，24 o，26 l，28 e，32 k，34 m，36 i，40 s，42 x，44 d。
51–100：更多字母和音节：51 r，53 c，54 l，55 s，56 a，57 d，58 m，59 t，60 e，62 n，64 i，66 p，68 o，69 h，72 u，73 and，74 am，75 as，93 again，97 an。
符号字母：m n，E o，ω m，Ǝ r，⊔ i，+ l，φ s，Δ t，* y，⊕ a，π c，ɔ d，∪ e，C p，等等。
一份按字母顺序排列的代码，从100到约735：128 be，183 can，202 do，276 from，323 him，335 his，362 King，457 Parliament，533 shall，572 to，574 the，578 that，636 will，732 England，735 France。

Reade 的信用的是同一种密码。信中最常见的代码组正是重建本里的 the、to 和 that，它的符号字母也就是密钥上的那些。最初转录成数字的几个字符其实是密钥上的符号字母：φ 看起来像 8，ɔ 像 2，带圈的 n 形符号像 D。

03 解读

正体是依据密钥解读的。斜体词来自本项目重建的值。[方括号] 中的词是对密钥留空的码组所作的推测（第04节）。虚码已删去。

A 段（f. 148v 底部至 f. 149r），接在明写的“It is to be seriously considered what is to be done”之后：

in case a proclamation shall goe out against my [455: patron?] as against the last [673], for as to the one side, I am of opinion they have not enough against him to confiscate his fortune, and they would be [willing] to take the advantage of his refusall to return upon the a summons. So on the other side, I do not find how his person can be strong if he shall return. The only [way] i[s] [conceived] to be that [His Majesty] will please to prevent that cause, if they purpose to take it, bu[t pres]sing that [Mr Forster] [should] give in his [90]; but God knows why that will suit.

B 段（f. 149r），接在明写的“Sir William St Ravy (as I hear) parts this day for England, but I do but hear it from others, for he comes not at us”之后：

I am [informed] he has done [Mr Forster] no good [offices] here, and that he will not do him the best in Court; they have an eye [over] him.

明写部分紧接着写道：“It may be that Mr Forster may have ill offices done him in England…”。这证实了这段话的意思，也支持了718是 Forster 的推测。

04 仍不确定的部分

这两段共有254个码组，去掉虚码后为215个。等级遵循 README 的约定：H 为密钥上的值，C 为上下文可靠的重建值，M 为推测。

H，193个码组（89.8%）：依据密钥上的值解读，包括 203 done 和 729 “ct.”（Court），这两个是表上的旁注。562 在密钥上是“strong”，取当时“安全、稳妥”的意思（“how his person can be strong if he shall return”）。在2026年9月30日之前，本页那里印的是重建的“secure”。
C，8个码组（3.7%）：根据代码的字母顺序位置和上下文重建的值。它们是 100 advantage、275 find、437 one、524 return（两次）和 573 they/the（三次）。573 在两处读作“they”说得通。在“upon 573 a summons”中“the”更合适，那里的 14（a）大概是笔误。密钥纸上573处有一个部分可辨的条目“u. th…”：这个词以 th 开头，其余部分压在一条划线之下。它与 they 或 the 都吻合，但损坏太重，无法确认是哪一个。
M，14个码组（6.5%）：重建本上留空，为推测。
- 650 way，160 conceived，319 His Majesty，539 should。
- 718 Forster（两次），359 informed，444 offices，452 over。
- 660，“they would be [willing] to take the advantage”：willing、glad 或 ready 都合乎文意。在密钥上，660 是 y 字头词之间的一个空格（652 you，662 you，664 your，666 yet），w 字头的词不会排在那里，而没有哪个 y 字头的词能给出这个意思。
- 487（在“bu…ing”之中）、90（他的答复或账目）、455（我的恩主？）和 673（前任掌玺大臣？Finch 与 Windebank 一样，于1640年12月出逃）。

只有一份更完整的密钥副本才能解决这些问题。DECODE 上没有别的 Windebank 密钥，也没有找到用这种密码写的其他 Windebank 信件。

05 方法

图像取自 DECODE，两段密文已转录。签名和背书确定了写信人。
最先试的是“Mr Browne”的密钥（R8694，Add MS 72438），失败了。它的代码只到371，字母表也解不出任何东西。
在 DECODE 记录列表中检索 Windebank，找到了 Add MS 32256 中的 R9115。它的两页都以全分辨率转录，录成一张表。
把这张表套用到两段密文上，对照密钥的符号表再次核查了存疑的字形，并对结果作了度量。

没有找到此信的刊本或摘要汇编。这类 Harleian 信件不在 Calendars of State Papers Domestic 的收录范围内。
