Robert Reade から従兄弟へ、パリ、1641年4月19日

要約。 DECODE は R7766 を、1641年4月19日付のパリからの部分的に暗号化された手紙として、書き手と宛先を不明として目録化している。手紙には “R. Reade” と署名がある。裏書きは “1641: April 19: my Cousin Reade from Paris” である。書き手は Sir Francis Windebank の甥で秘書の Robert Reade である。Windebank はチャールズ1世の国務大臣で、長期議会から逃れるため1640年12月にパリへ逃亡していた。平文は Strafford の裁判、国王の文書、Walter Montagu の到着、書き手に対する中傷を扱っている。2つの暗号箇所は一家の私的な用件を運んでいる。Deciphering Branch の鍵の巻である BL Add MS 32256 には、“Windebank to his Son. Paris. March 1642” という見出しの紙（DECODE R9115）がある。これは同じ暗号の再構成である。1–100 の文字（50未満の奇数は冗字）、記号文字の一揃い、そして約735までのアルファベット順のコードである。これを使うと、最初の箇所は in case a proclamation shall go out against [him] … they have not enough against him to confiscate his fortune, and they would be [willing] to take the advantage of his refusal to return upon a summons; so on the other side, I do not find how his person can be strong if he shall return と解読される（strong は「安全な」という古い意味）。2つ目の箇所は、Sir William St Ravy がパリで Mr Forster によい働きをしなかったと述べている。215の有意な符号群のうち、193は鍵の値から、8はここで再構成した値から解読した。残る14は再構成が空欄のままにしている符号群で、推測として示す。範囲：部分。93%を解読、7%は推測。

01 手紙

点で区切られた数字の5行と、いくつかの記号 — Harley MS 7001 f. 149r、ページの上部：f. 148v から続く暗号で、“[as to] the one side, I am of opinion they have not enough against him to confiscate his fortune” で始まる。画像：British Library, Harley MS 7001 f. 149r、DECODE R7766 経由。

手紙は3ページ（ff. 148r、148v、149r）にわたる。宛名の葉 f. 149v には裏書きと “Given by Mr G. Holmes” がある。宛先の4月1日付の手紙への返事で、Reade 自身の16日付の手紙に続くものである。平文は次のことを扱っている：

Reade が庭で2人のフランス人紳士に、議会の貴族たちは愚か者だと言ったという悪意ある噂。彼はこれを長々と否定し、宛先にそれを首席裁判官に持ち出すよう頼んでいる。
街道は兵士であふれ、そのため一家はさらに1か月パリの自分たちの地区にとどまっていること。
当時裁判にかけられていた “My Lo: Lieutenant”、すなわち Strafford が “fallen into the hands of noblemen and persons of honor” であること。
国王の文書箱と、Mr Treasurer が持つ写し。
王妃の用件。
Mr Montagu の到着と、“very civilly” 迎えられたこと。
Sir William St Ravy のイングランドへの出発。
一家のもとに滞在している Mr Forster の弁護。

暗号は、手紙が Windebank 自身の話に移るところで始まる。“It is to be seriously considered what is to be done”。

02 鍵

551 から 600 までの数字の列。そのいくつかの横に語が書かれている：strong, the, than, this, that, they, there, time — BL Add MS 32256、“Windebank’s C[ipher] continued 1640” のページ：551 からの再構成されたコードで、572 to、574 the、578 that、586 they、587 there。画像：British Library, Add MS 32256、Windebank の暗号の続きのページ（f. 4 の後）、DECODE R9115 経由。

DECODE R9115 は2ページの作業用の紙である。Deciphering Branch は数字の空の格子を印刷し、値が復元されるにつれてそれを書き込んでいった。1ページ目には “Windebank to his Son. Paris. March 1642”、2ページ目には “Windebank’s C[ipher] continued 1640” という見出しがある。暗号は4つの部分からなる：

1–50：単一の文字。奇数にはすべて +（冗字）の印がある。偶数は文字である：2 c、4 f、6 n、8 h、10 r、12 t、14 a、16 g、18 p、20 b、22 u、24 o、26 l、28 e、32 k、34 m、36 i、40 s、42 x、44 d。
51–100：さらなる文字と音節：51 r、53 c、54 l、55 s、56 a、57 d、58 m、59 t、60 e、62 n、64 i、66 p、68 o、69 h、72 u、73 and、74 am、75 as、93 again、97 an。
記号文字：m n、E o、ω m、Ǝ r、⊔ i、+ l、φ s、Δ t、* y、⊕ a、π c、ɔ d、∪ e、C p、ほか。
アルファベット順のコード、100 から約735まで：128 be、183 can、202 do、276 from、323 him、335 his、362 King、457 Parliament、533 shall、572 to、574 the、578 that、636 will、732 England、735 France。

Reade の手紙は同じ暗号を使っている。その中で最も頻度の高い符号群は再構成の the、to、that であり、記号文字も鍵のものである。最初に数字として転写したいくつかの文字は鍵の記号文字である。φ は 8 に、ɔ は 2 に、ループ付きの n の記号は D に似ている。

03 解読

立体の文字は鍵から解読したもの。斜体の語はここで再構成した値によるもの。[角括弧]内の語は鍵が空欄のままにしている符号群についての推測である（第04節）。冗字は除いた。

箇所 A（f. 148v の下端から f. 149r）、平文の “It is to be seriously considered what is to be done” の後：

in case a proclamation shall goe out against my [455: patron?] as against the last [673], for as to the one side, I am of opinion they have not enough against him to confiscate his fortune, and they would be [willing] to take the advantage of his refusall to return upon the a summons. So on the other side, I do not find how his person can be strong if he shall return. The only [way] i[s] [conceived] to be that [His Majesty] will please to prevent that cause, if they purpose to take it, bu[t pres]sing that [Mr Forster] [should] give in his [90]; but God knows why that will suit.

箇所 B（f. 149r）、平文の “Sir William St Ravy (as I hear) parts this day for England, but I do but hear it from others, for he comes not at us” の後：

I am [informed] he has done [Mr Forster] no good [offices] here, and that he will not do him the best in Court; they have an eye [over] him.

平文はそのまま “It may be that Mr Forster may have ill offices done him in England…” と続く。これは箇所の意味を裏づけ、718 が Forster だという推測を支持する。

04 不確かなまま残る点

2つの箇所には254群があり、冗字を除くと215群である。等級は README の規約に従う。H は鍵にある値、C は文脈の確かな再構成値、M は推測である。

H、193群（89.8%）：鍵の値から解読したもの。紙の上の脇書きである 203 done と 729 “ct.”（Court）を含む。562 は鍵では “strong” で、当時の「安全な、安泰な」という意味である（“how his person can be strong if he shall return”）。2026年9月30日まで、このページはそこに再構成した “secure” を載せていた。
C、8群（3.7%）：コードのアルファベット順の位置と文脈から再構成した値。100 advantage、275 find、437 one、524 return（2回）、573 they/the（3回）である。573 は2か所で “they” に合う。“upon 573 a summons” では “the” のほうがよく合い、そこでの 14（a）はおそらく書き損じである。鍵の紙の 573 には一部判読できる項目 “u. th…” がある。語は th で始まり、残りは罫線の下に入り込んでいる。they にも the にも合うが、損傷がひどくてどちらとも確認できない。
M、14群（6.5%）：再構成では空欄で、推測によるもの。
- 650 way、160 conceived、319 His Majesty、539 should。
- 718 Forster（2回）、359 informed 444 offices、452 over。
- 660、“they would be [willing] to take the advantage”：willing、glad、ready のいずれも意味に合う。鍵では 660 は y で始まる語の間で空欄になっており（652 you、662 you、664 your、666 yet）、そこに w で始まる語は来ないはずで、意味をなす y で始まる語もない。
- 487（“bu…ing” の中）、90（彼の返答または釈明）、455（my patron?）、673（前の国璽尚書か？ Finch は Windebank と同じく1640年12月に逃亡した）。

これらを決着させられるのは、より完全な鍵の写しだけである。DECODE にはほかに Windebank の鍵はなく、この暗号による Windebank の手紙もそこには見つからなかった。

05 方法

画像を DECODE から取得し、2つの箇所を転写した。署名と裏書きから書き手がわかった。
最初に “Mr Browne” の鍵（R8694、Add MS 72438）を試したが、失敗した。そのコードは 371 で終わっており、アルファベットからは何も得られない。
DECODE のレコード一覧で Windebank を検索すると、Add MS 32256 の R9115 が見つかった。その2ページとも全解像度で転写し、表として入力した。
表を箇所に適用し、疑わしい字形を鍵の記号一覧と再度照合し、結果を計測した。

この手紙の刊本や目録は見つからなかった。この種の Harleian の書簡は Calendars of State Papers Domestic の対象外である。
