01 這封信
此信共三頁（ff. 148r、148v、149r）。地址葉 f. 149v 上有背書和“Given by Mr G. Holmes”字樣。它回覆收信人4月1日的來信，接續 Reade 自己16日的信。明寫部分涉及：
- 一則惡意傳言，說 Reade 在一座花園裡對兩位法國紳士說議會的勳爵們都是傻瓜。他用了很長篇幅否認，並請收信人向首席大法官提出此事；
- 道路上滿是士兵，這使一家人在巴黎住處所在的街區又困了一個月；
- “My Lo: Lieutenant”，即正在受審的斯特拉福德，“fallen into the hands of noblemen and persons of honor”（落入了貴族和體面人士之手）；
- 國王的檔案匣，以及財務大臣先生持有的一份副本；
- 王后的事務；
- Montagu 先生到來，受到“very civilly”（十分禮貌）的接待；
- Sir William St Ravy 動身前往英格蘭；
- 為寄居在這一家中的 Forster 先生所作的辯護。
密文從信件轉而談 Windebank 本人的地方開始：“It is to be seriously considered what is to be done”。
02 金鑰
DECODE R9115 是一份兩頁的工作表。破譯處先印好空白的數字格子，再隨著值的復原逐一填入。第一頁標題為“Windebank to his Son. Paris. March 1642”，第二頁為“Windebank’s C[ipher] continued 1640”。這種密碼分四部分：
- 1–50：單個字母。每個奇數都標有 +（虛碼）。偶數是字母：2 c，4 f，6 n，8 h，10 r，12 t，14 a，16 g，18 p，20 b，22 u，24 o，26 l，28 e，32 k，34 m，36 i，40 s，42 x，44 d。
- 51–100：更多字母和音節：51 r，53 c，54 l，55 s，56 a，57 d，58 m，59 t，60 e，62 n，64 i，66 p，68 o，69 h，72 u，73 and，74 am，75 as，93 again，97 an。
- 符號字母：m n，E o，ω m，Ǝ r，⊔ i，+ l，φ s，Δ t，* y，⊕ a，π c，ɔ d，∪ e，C p，等等。
- 一份按字母順序排列的程式碼，從100到約735：128 be，183 can，202 do，276 from，323 him，335 his，362 King，457 Parliament，533 shall，572 to，574 the，578 that，636 will，732 England，735 France。
Reade 的信用的是同一種密碼。信中最常見的程式碼組正是重建本里的 the、to 和 that，它的符號字母也就是金鑰上的那些。最初轉錄成數字的幾個字元其實是金鑰上的符號字母：φ 看起來像 8，ɔ 像 2，帶圈的 n 形符號像 D。
03 解讀
正體是依據金鑰解讀的。斜體詞來自本專案重建的值。[方括號] 中的詞是對金鑰留空的碼組所作的推測（第04節）。虛碼已刪去。
A 段（f. 148v 底部至 f. 149r），接在明寫的“It is to be seriously considered what is to be done”之後：
in case a proclamation shall goe out against my [455: patron?] as against the last [673], for as to the one side, I am of opinion they have not enough against him to confiscate his fortune, and they would be [willing] to take the advantage of his refusall to return upon the a summons. So on the other side, I do not find how his person can be strong if he shall return. The only [way] i[s] [conceived] to be that [His Majesty] will please to prevent that cause, if they purpose to take it, bu[t pres]sing that [Mr Forster] [should] give in his [90]; but God knows why that will suit.
B 段（f. 149r），接在明寫的“Sir William St Ravy (as I hear) parts this day for England, but I do but hear it from others, for he comes not at us”之後：
I am [informed] he has done [Mr Forster] no good [offices] here, and that he will not do him the best in Court; they have an eye [over] him.
明寫部分緊接著寫道：“It may be that Mr Forster may have ill offices done him in England…”。這證實了這段話的意思，也支援了718是 Forster 的推測。
04 仍不確定的部分
這兩段共有254個碼組，去掉虛碼後為215個。等級遵循 README 的約定：H 為金鑰上的值，C 為上下文可靠的重建值，M 為推測。
- H，193個碼組（89.8%）：依據金鑰上的值解讀，包括 203 done 和 729 “ct.”（Court），這兩個是表上的旁註。562 在金鑰上是“strong”，取當時“安全、穩妥”的意思（“how his person can be strong if he shall return”）。在2026年9月30日之前，本頁那裡印的是重建的“secure”。
- C，8個碼組（3.7%）：根據程式碼的字母順序位置和上下文重建的值。它們是 100 advantage、275 find、437 one、524 return（兩次）和 573 they/the（三次）。573 在兩處讀作“they”說得通。在“upon 573 a summons”中“the”更合適，那裡的 14（a）大概是筆誤。金鑰紙上573處有一個部分可辨的條目“u. th…”：這個詞以 th 開頭，其餘部分壓在一條劃線之下。它與 they 或 the 都吻合，但損壞太重，無法確認是哪一個。
- M，14個碼組（6.5%）：重建本上留空，為推測。
- 650 way，160 conceived，319 His Majesty，539 should。
- 718 Forster（兩次），359 informed，444 offices，452 over。
- 660，“they would be [willing] to take the advantage”：willing、glad 或 ready 都合乎文意。在金鑰上，660 是 y 字頭詞之間的一個空格（652 you，662 you，664 your，666 yet），w 字頭的詞不會排在那裡，而沒有哪個 y 字頭的詞能給出這個意思。
- 487（在“bu…ing”之中）、90（他的答覆或賬目）、455（我的恩主？）和 673（前任掌璽大臣？Finch 與 Windebank 一樣，於1640年12月出逃）。
只有一份更完整的金鑰副本才能解決這些問題。DECODE 上沒有別的 Windebank 金鑰，也沒有找到用這種密碼寫的其他 Windebank 信件。
05 方法
- 影象取自 DECODE，兩段密文已轉錄。簽名和背書確定了寫信人。
- 最先試的是“Mr Browne”的金鑰（R8694，Add MS 72438），失敗了。它的程式碼只到371，字母表也解不出任何東西。
- 在 DECODE 記錄列表中檢索 Windebank，找到了 Add MS 32256 中的 R9115。它的兩頁都以全解析度轉錄，錄成一張表。
- 把這張表套用到兩段密文上，對照金鑰的符號表再次核查了存疑的字形，並對結果作了度量。
沒有找到此信的刊本或摘要彙編。這類 Harleian 信件不在 Calendars of State Papers Domestic 的收錄範圍內。
