摘要。總目第99條是一條 DECODE 記錄，內容為 Randolph 致薩塞克斯的一封信，未附解讀，日期為1569年，“what the cipher hides not known”（密文所藏內容不明）。這封信註明寫於愛丁堡，1570年7月5日。它是英文明文，含五段密文，最長的一段約七十個詞。Boyd 的 Calendar of Scottish Papers 第三卷（1903年）第339號，對薩塞克斯所存的這封信的明文抄本作了提要。在找到任何解讀之前，我們以這份提要為猜詞，用求解器（以英語語言模型為目標的模擬退火）復原了約70%的密文詞。它復原出了“murtherers and traitors”、“determined to have made a regent”和“whome nether by lawe, duetie or conscien they thinke them selves bounde unto”。該卷的下一葉 f. 278（DECODE R4932）是同時代的解讀：一位書記員把每個密文詞重抄一遍，在上方寫下明文。這一葉證實了求解器找到的每一個值，並補上了剩餘的空缺。信中說，蘇格蘭女王一派“have litle confidens [in] the Q. of England, that so ofte changeth her course”（對那位屢屢改弦易轍的英格蘭女王沒什麼信心）。國王一方的貴族本已“determined to have made a regent, dyd staye it”（決定擁立一位攝政，卻擱置了），是寄望於更好的援助。他們如今擔心被迫與“murderers and traytors, bothe of kyng and regent”（弒殺國王和攝政的兇手與叛徒）為伍。Randolph 還說，他已和莫頓談過，士兵的軍餉應當繼續發放，而 Grange 並不指望蘇格蘭女王“home cumming”（回國）。唯一剩下的疑問，在書記員第一行註解中三個模糊的詞上。

01 文獻

f. 277r–v 是 Randolph 親筆寫的信，在背面頁尾署名並註明日期。f. 278 是一張半葉，背籤為“5 July 1570”。上面抄出了密文詞，詞與詞之間用短劃隔開，上方寫著明文，三小段密文在頁尾以明文解讀出來。DECODE 把這兩葉作為兩條獨立記錄：R4931，無解讀；R4932，標為已解密。它連結為金鑰的那條記錄 R4930，重複使用了 f. 277 的影象，同時還有 Caligula C II ff. 76–77。那兩葉是伯利關於諾福克公爵和羅斯主教信件的筆記，上面沒有金鑰。

02 密碼

這是一種分詞的替換密碼。它的符號有拉丁字母、數字和自創記號，常見母音各有兩三個符號，有些符號代表人物或短語。這些符號是 ⊟ = “the S. Q. partie in Scotland”（蘇格蘭女王在蘇格蘭的一派），θθ = “the S. Queene”（蘇格蘭女王），ΠΠ = “the Q. of England”（英格蘭女王），以及代表莫頓伯爵的劃掉的 +++。註解證實的值包括：= c，c u/v，D r，q s，ɛ n，δ t，ϙ o，Ӿ o，4 d，# i，8 e，ʒ a，3 f，Π g，⍏ n，U h，Ω t，ϖ m，λ m，≡ i，Γ h。Tomokiyo 的頁面沒有列出這把金鑰。他收錄的 Randolph 密碼是1559–60年 Sadler–Croft 的那些。

Q. partie in Scotland wyl reke ther owne […] the S. queene handes […] fortefy, have litle confidens [in] the Q. of England, that so ofte changeth her course; and now of late of all, whereas they were determined to have made a regent, dyd staye it full sore agaynst their willes, upon hope of better comfort, and shall be forced to yeld [to] ennemies, and [be] conforted [with] murderers and traytors, bothe of kyng and regent, and to obbey her whome nether by lawe, duetie or conscien they thinke them selves bounde unto. This your L. shall reyde not spoken of my selfe, but this is a great parte of their greif, and all most everie mans speche, and preached in pulpet in playner wordes then I lyste to wryte.

04 方法

R4931 的兩幅影象與 R4930 中的兩幅逐位元組相同，所以先檢查了那條“金鑰”記錄，發現裡面沒有金鑰。把 Boyd 根據薩塞克斯明文抄本所作的提要與各段密文對齊。把密文轉錄成符號序列後，用求解器（模擬退火）以英語 n-gram 模型（en-1640s）為目標擬合金鑰，並保留分詞。在不固定任何猜詞的情況下，它就已得出“murtherers and traitors”、“regent”、“whome … nor conscience they thinke them selves … unto”。把猜詞作為已知明文固定後，約70%的文字出來了。其餘部分無法收斂，因為頁面上幾個看起來相似的符號（普通的、捲曲的和帶橫槓的 x；3 與帶尾巴的 ʒ）代表不同的值。隨後對同一卷的 DECODE 記錄作了一遍梳理，在下一葉找到了 R4932，即解讀。先前復原的每一個值都與之一致。
